The Repetition of Mary
The Repetition of Mary is a contemplative digital work composed of 250 Marian images, intentionally similar in form and presence. The repetition is deliberate. Like prayer itself, meaning is found not in variation, but in return.
Across centuries, Mary has been spoken again and again, named in litanies, whispered in private devotion, carried in memory. This project follows that rhythm. Each image is a single saying of her name, a visual echo of prayer repeated not for novelty, but for nearness.
No one image claims fullness. Each stands beside the others, forming a collective act rather than a hierarchy. Alone, it is complete; together, they become a quiet chorus.
In a culture of speed and excess, this work offers stillness. To hold one is not merely to own, but to participate in remembrance…one voice joined to many.
“Mary is the Mother who patiently accompanies us on our journey.”
Trading Philosophy
This work was not created to resist movement, nor to encourage haste.
Trading is permitted, but never required.
Within this collection, exchange is understood not as flipping, but as passage. Each image may rest with one holder for a time, and then move on when its work there feels complete.
Trading is welcomed when it arises from discernment rather than urgency. A piece may be released because it no longer feels needed, or because another feels closer to the prayer being lived now. Such movement is part of the work’s life.
There is no advantage in accumulation, nor virtue in speed. Some collectors may choose to hold only one image at a time, allowing it to circulate. Others may hold several, or none for long. All of these paths honor the project equally.
Transfers may also occur as gifts, offered to mark a season, a grief, a beginning, or a quiet hope. In these moments, the work functions less as an asset and more as a blessing.
No image gains meaning by scarcity alone. Its value is not determined by how often it is traded, but by how intentionally it is held.
The collection does not ask to be completed quickly. It unfolds as it will.
Collector Guidelines
These works are offered without requirement. There is no correct way to hold them, no expected posture or practice. What follows are simply ways others may choose to live with the work.
Hold one, or many.
Some may keep a single image, returning to it often. Others may pass through several over time. Neither approach completes the work more fully than the other.
Return, rather than display.
These images are not meant to demand attention. They may be opened quietly, revisited in moments of stillness, or kept unseen for long stretches of time.
Let repetition do its work.
If the images feel similar, allow that sameness to remain. Like prayer, meaning gathers slowly, often without notice.
Trade only when ready.
If you choose to release or exchange a piece, do so gently. A change in season, attention, or need is reason enough.
Gift without explanation.
These works may be passed on as offerings, to mark a moment, a prayer, or a quiet wish for another. No words are required.
Numbering is not hierarchy.
No image is earlier or later in worth. Each is one saying among many.
There is no end to the prayer.
Ownership may change. The work continues.
